Tennessee’s after-school STEM funding stream restricts eligibility to organizations that operate within counties designated as economically distressed by the state Department of Economic and Community Development. Applicants must also maintain active partnerships with one of the six public universities authorized to issue STEM endorsements.
Nonprofit and educational entities must document that at least 60 percent of participating students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. Program budgets require line-item separation of university faculty stipends from equipment purchases, with no more than 25 percent of total funds allocated to administrative overhead.
Tennessee’s application cycle aligns with the state fiscal year beginning July 1, requiring submission of audited financial statements from the prior calendar year. Review panels score proposals on alignment with Tennessee Academic Standards for Science and mathematics rather than national frameworks.
Unlike Kentucky programs that allow broader county eligibility, Tennessee reviewers prioritize applications demonstrating measurable increases in student performance on the state’s annual TCAP assessments in grades 5 and 8.
