Grant Overview
Tennessee cultural nonprofits must distinguish proposed activities by whether they will occur inside the four metropolitan counties (Shelby, Davidson, Knox, Hamilton) or the remaining 91 counties classified as rural or micropolitan by the U.S. Office of Management and Budget. Rural counties contain fewer than 1.2 certified art historians per 100,000 residents according to state workforce data.
Urban institutions hold larger historic American art holdings but serve denser populations with higher baseline attendance; rural institutions hold smaller collections yet face longer travel times to any conservation lab. Applications must therefore include separate attendance projections and transportation cost lines for each county category.
Implementation requires documentation of drive-time radii from the nearest interstate exit to proposed workshop sites. Projects located more than 45 minutes from an interstate must budget for mobile exhibition crates rated for temperature-controlled transport over secondary roads.
Outcome reporting separates urban and rural participation counts; cross-subsidization of rural site costs from urban ticket revenue is not permitted within a single award. Nonprofits must also list the exact number of works by Tennessee artists born before 1940 that will be included in each county-level exhibition.
Unlike Kentucky or Alabama applications, Tennessee requires separate rural and urban work plans with distinct mileage and staffing calculations.
