Grant Overview
Tennessee funds coach training that embeds life-skill instruction into regular practice plans. State education statistics indicate that 31 percent of high school students in the 17 Appalachian counties fail to complete a postsecondary credential within six years of graduation. Soccer programs in those counties serve as one of the few structured activities linking middle-school participants to mentorship on time management, goal setting, and financial literacy.
Coaches in Knox, Hamilton, and Sullivan counties must document existing practice schedules that currently allocate fewer than 15 minutes per session to non-athletic topics. Funded training covers curriculum modules developed by Tennessee 4-H and the Tennessee Higher Education Initiative that align with state academic standards for personal finance and career exploration. Applications require letters from school principals confirming that life-skill sessions will not conflict with Title IX equity requirements.
Tennessee differs from Kentucky and Alabama because its county-based school funding formula creates larger resource gaps between Appalachian districts and suburban Memphis or Nashville systems. Grant requests must therefore include a comparison of current per-player equipment budgets in the applicant county versus the state median.
Recipients receive $2,650 on average and must complete a minimum of 12 contact hours in approved life-skill modules. Final reports require submission of session logs signed by a school administrator and a one-page summary of observed changes in player attendance or grade-point averages where data are available from the district.
Only coaches whose teams include at least 25 percent of participants eligible for free or reduced-price lunch qualify for the higher award tier.
