Tennessee's research-capacity constraints center on its 15-county Appalachian region where sarcoma case volumes are tracked through a single state cancer registry with limited analytic staffing. Partnerships must therefore route patient-reported outcome collection through the Tennessee Department of Health's existing data infrastructure.
Capacity Gaps in Tennessee Local community organizations eligible for subcontracts are restricted to those already credentialed under Tennessee's Community Health Worker Certification Program. New entities must complete a six-month onboarding process before data access is granted.
Infrastructure constraints include reliance on three regional medical centers for sarcoma pathology review and a statewide shortage of certified clinical research coordinators outside the Nashville and Memphis metropolitan areas. Workforce limitations require applicants to budget for cross-training of existing oncology nurses rather than new hires.
Tennessee differs from Kentucky and Alabama by requiring that all community-based data collection tools undergo pre-approval by the Tennessee Tumor Registry to ensure compatibility with its mandated reporting fields.
