Workforce Shortages in Tennessee Fasteners Supply Chain
The state added 14,300 manufacturing positions between 2020 and 2024 while community college completions in precision machining declined 11 percent. Facilities in Rutherford, Hamblen, and Sullivan counties report average vacancy durations of 94 days for quality technicians responsible for incoming fastener inspection.
The grant supports programs that embed actual OEM torque and proof-load specifications into credential pathways at institutions serving these counties.
Unlike Kentucky or Alabama efforts, Tennessee applications must incorporate state-specific data from the Department of Labor's manufacturing incident database.
Tennessee Automotive Corridor Infrastructure
Assembly plants in the Nashville and Knoxville regions receive 62 percent of their structural fasteners from suppliers within a 150-mile radius. Training sites must demonstrate physical proximity to these suppliers so that participants can conduct on-site material verification exercises during scheduled production downtime.
Targeted Skill Development Approach
Eligible projects allocate no less than 30 percent of budget to portable hardness and tension testing equipment that remains at participating Tennessee technical centers after the grant period.
