Grant Overview
School Readiness Criteria in Tennessee Tennessee requires that at least one certified science teacher from the applicant school complete a three-hour online module on state science standards before funds are released. The module is hosted by the Tennessee Department of Education and must be finished within 30 days of award notice. Districts classified as "priority" or "focus" under the state's accountability system receive an automatic 10-point scoring advantage.
Curriculum Integration and Reporting Journals must contain prompts aligned to the Tennessee Academic Standards for Science grades 3–8. Teachers submit a single PDF of redacted student work at the end of the semester; the state does not accept scanned notebooks. The $250–$1,000 award is calibrated to the cost of replacing one class set of 30 composition books plus colored pencils after normal school supply budgets are exhausted.
Demographic and Facility Constraints Middle Tennessee districts must demonstrate that at least 40 percent of participating students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. East Tennessee applicants instead document that schools sit more than 20 miles from the nearest state park, requiring bus transportation. West Tennessee projects must confirm that field sites are outside the New Madrid seismic zone during spring flooding season.
Tennessee's county-based school funding formula produces larger per-pupil disparities than in contiguous states. Applicants therefore attach the most recent Tennessee Comptroller fiscal-capacity report showing that local maintenance-of-effort funds cannot cover the requested journaling supplies.
