Tennessee readiness requirements for music-therapy trauma-recovery projects emphasize existing clinical partnerships with state-licensed mental health facilities. Organizations must already hold a memorandum of understanding with at least one of the 16 community mental health centers certified by the Tennessee Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services.
Infrastructure constraints include the concentration of board-certified music therapists within Davidson and Shelby counties, leaving 72 of Tennessee’s 95 counties without resident certified providers according to the Certification Board for Music Therapists 2023 roster. Workforce composition data show that 84 percent of current therapists maintain full-time hospital employment, limiting availability for community-based sessions outside weekday business hours.
Readiness documentation requires submission of current Tennessee Board of Examiners in Psychology provider numbers for all clinical supervisors and proof that performance venues meet state seismic safety standards applicable to public assembly spaces. Applicants must also demonstrate capacity to collect standardized emotional-assessment scores using instruments approved by the Tennessee Department of Health.
Unlike Kentucky applications, Tennessee requires demonstration of alignment with the state’s certified peer-support specialist credentialing system because of recent legislative changes to Medicaid-reimbursable services.
Who Should Apply in Tennessee Only entities with physical addresses in counties classified as Health Professional Shortage Areas for mental health by the Health Resources and Services Administration may apply.
Tennessee Music Therapy Infrastructure Constraints Budgets must include line items for travel reimbursement at the state mileage rate of $0.655 per mile to compensate for the average 47-mile distance between certified therapists and rural service sites.
