Applications require verification that at least 60 percent of participating families reside in these counties and that requested equipment supports preparation of meals using Tennessee-grown commodities.
Reviewers examine whether the budget separates durable equipment from consumable ingredients, with equipment costs capped at 70 percent of the total request. Proposals must include letters from county extension offices confirming that classes will use existing 4-H or family-and-consumer-science classrooms. Tennessee differs from Kentucky because reviewers require documented coordination with the Department of Health’s obesity prevention registry before disbursement.
Equipment lists that include refrigeration units rated for 50 cubic feet or larger receive additional points when paired with delivery vans capable of reaching elevations above 2,000 feet. Past awards funded mobile prep stations and curriculum kits deployed across the Cumberland Plateau and West Tennessee Delta regions.
