Tennessee Film Preservation Collaborative
Tennessee's film collections center on materials recording Nashville session musicians and Memphis studio operations from the 1950s onward. Current operational capacity resides in three institutions that lack coordinated loan protocols or shared technical standards for element creation.
Operations require standardized inspection forms and joint training sessions because individual archives use incompatible reporting fields for shrinkage measurement and color timing. Without these protocols, duplicate work occurs and gaps in coverage remain for titles held in private hands in the Tri-Cities region.
The funding supports development of a shared database and delivery of two multi-day training workshops per year focused on acetate decomposition detection. Applicants must commit to uploading condition data within 30 days of inspection and to making resulting access copies available through a single statewide portal.
Priority is given to projects that cover footage from both East Tennessee mountain communities and Middle Tennessee urban studios in a single application. This ensures operational procedures account for the distinct climate control needs of collections stored at elevations above 2,000 feet versus those held in the Cumberland River valley.
Unlike states with centralized state film offices, Tennessee requires documented inter-institutional agreements before funds are released for equipment or training.
