Summary

This award is open to farmers based in the United States who have 10 years or fewer of experience in farming or ranching and who are actively embracing or transitioning toward regenerative organic agriculture. The focus is on promoting practices that improve biodiversity, bolster soil health, enhance climate resilience, and engage communities in sustainable food systems. Eligible uses of the award include purchasing equipment or infrastructure that supports agroecological methods, implementing new regenerative practices on-farm, or strengthening community-oriented programs related to the farm’s work.

For the top recipient, the award offers $10,000 to invest in equipment or initiatives that enhance regenerative farming efforts, combined with an all-expenses-paid trip (valued around $5,000) to a research and training center abroad. A second-place recipient is eligible for $5,000 plus a travel-related benefit (valued around $2,500), and a third‐place finalist receives access to educational and training resources. The geographic eligibility spans all 50 U.S. states and U.S. territories.

Applicants must demonstrate how their farm embraces practices such as cover cropping, crop rotation, reduced or no chemical inputs, agro-biodiversity, community engagement (for example through local partnerships or direct-to-consumer models), and long-term sustainability. Certification as organic is not required, although proof of commitment to regenerative organic principles is needed. A jury of experts in sustainable agriculture will review applications on the basis of innovation, environmental impact, social equity, and potential for scalability.

The submission window usually opens in the late fall or early winter and ends in January of the following year, with winners announced on a date tied to Earth Day in April.

If you are a relatively new farmer committed to regenerative organic methods and building community-oriented agricultural work, this award could be a strong fit.
